~... I Sew Am ... Once Upon A Time, Long Ago .....'

there was a wonderful Mother & Grandmother that could sew beautifully, taking the smallest or oldest piece of fabric & creating breathtaking fashions & quilts from them. They were always making beautiful things for we girls to wear.

This Mother had 4 daughters whom she taught how to sew, crochet, knit, etc. The eldest daughter, try as she might, was a terrible student ... & did not have that great of an interest either ... but she did try.

Even in home ec. class this daughter sewed the assigned project dress, aprons, pot holders & so on. Struggle as she might, she did get the projects completed with reasonable grades.

Then the daughter grew up, got married, became blessed with her first pregnancy & decided she was going to save a TON OF $$$$$ for her darling sailor DH. She bought all this wonderful fabric, lovely maternity smock patterns ... then settled into pinning & cutting these fabrics that were going to become 'designer' fashions.

Pretty proud of herself when she got that first gorgeous smock done ... she was! THEN Mother came home on her lunch hour, took one look at the exquisite creation & started yelling 'MARY DONELDA!!!! GET THE RIPPER!!!!!!!!!!!'

Whhhhhaaaaaaatttttttttt!?!?!? Well, if ? I tell you the sleeves ? were in on the wrong sides, the front ? & back ? were sewn in reverse, it was hemmed ? too short, I wondered what those facings ? were for .......

I SEW am not a seamtress ...

The End! Have a beautiful & blessed day. Hugs, TTFN ~ Marydon
*****Please remember those that are in great need of our prayers & support at this time in their lives.

  4. Hello Marydon, I am sure you are a beautiful seamstress... my mama sewed all of our clothes when I was a little girl... I loved that no one else had dresses like mine...I did not inherit her skills though, I did get a new sewing machine for my birthday in May... it is now threaded... my home-ec teacher in junior high graded my blouse we had to make poorly even though my mama said it was beautiful (she was not just saying that, she checked every stitch and made sure I did it right)... the teacher was one of those not so nice ones back in the days when they were sometimes VERY cruel to the students... I will never forget the hurt I felt when gave me a very poor grade... I wore that blouse many times though and loved it! Thanks for sharing your memories...Is Marydonelda your full name? So very pretty! Bisous... Julie Marie

  6. Well I taught myself to sew, my grandmother taught me how to make rag rugs and how to crochet. When my wife and I got married, her and I made her dress. It was beautiful. Thanks for the comment on my blog about being patient. I try but even I run out sometimes.

  7. Sew funny! Really this makes me laugh because I have a daughter who is domestically challenged, but tries so hard. I give her gentle advice because I don't want her to give up. I loved this post Marydon!

  9. What a touching tale MaryDon. When I was young, my stepmother taught me how to sew by inspecting each step and ripping out before my eyes, demanding I redo it until it was perfect. I take a lighter approach now days and just enjoy creating whatever. Thank you for the story.

  11. Marydone, what a funny heart-warming story. I loved it and had to go back and re-read it to make sure that I did not miss anything! Makes me think of when i was young, my Mom sewed alot too, made most of our "play clothes", and taught all of us girls had to sew. My sisters seemed to excell at it, turned out wonderful kerchiefs and aprons to give to Grandma at Christmas, or they made their own skirts. The best that I could do was take all the remnants and create little chairs and sofas for my mini dolls. How I loved creating those things. Now I do sew, have a new machine and seem to able to disconnect myself from the joy of stitching on that machine, now that I have finally learned how to keep my stitches straight!! :-) thanks for sharing such a fun story. warmly, Debby

  12. Sweet story...
My daughter is a career woman. She is 38 & lives at home with us. I have no idea what she will do when we are no longer around as she hasn't got enough domesticity to put in a thimble! LOL!!
    I guess I have spoiled her.....LOL!!
    Have a wonderful day!
    Love,
    Marilyn

  14. Love your story....How sweet of you to want to make your tops to help save money! If I tried to sew a garment, I would have the same luck....I stick with pillows and curtians. I can sew a straight line pretty good!

  16. Hillarious! I cannot sew at all. I made a dress for New Years Eve many years ago, and I hated every stitch I had to put into that dress. It turned out beautiful. That was the last thing I ever did sew, except for buttons. I admire anyone who has that talent!

  18. Hi Marydon,

    Lovely story!
I enjoy sewing - our daughter is doing Fashion at University.
She is great at drawing and designing and I can say that her skill with the construction of the garments is getting better. I do think... as the saying goes, practice, makes perfect.

    Hugs

  24. Marydon, I just google the image I am looking for. If I wanted a Halloween image and I wanted it chartoonish I would good animated halloween gif and look at the images on google. If I wanted something to move I would look at the gif. If you just want still pictures with no movement you just look up images or clipart. If you want a picture of a woman sewing just type in woman sewing gif or animated woman sewing gif this might bring up a few, I found a few but not sure what style you are looking for. When you find the image you are looking for right click and save on your computer. Then you have a picture. Hope this helped.

  27. My Mom was an awesome seamstress and could alter anything well. She made all our clothes out of feed-sacks and made home made starch with flour and water . I remember ironing them with the irons off her wood burning stove.
I sewed making my kids clothes but just do repairs now for my daughter .

  28. That is too funny Marydon! I never was good at sewing either however my mom loved to sew and made ALL my dresses from ONE pattern when I was young...I was soooooo glad when she stopped and I could wear stylish store bought clothes.

  29. This is so cute! Did you ever see the I love Lucy show where Ricky told her to make her own clothes and dye her own hair. She cut the carpet on the floor while trying to cut her dress. It is hilarious.

  32. This hysterical. I can sooo relate.

Want to know what my Momma said?

"Becky! You are making COW LEG STITCHES! Take them out NOW!" That meant they were toooo long and toooo far apart.

    :(

    I finally did learn though.

    Love to you~

  33. Marydon, there is an old saying "She who sews, rips"! That is one thing we all are good at. I don't know where I got the sewing bug - none of the women in my life sewed at all. I can remember my grandmother made some aprons but there were no quilters, knitters, crocheters, no one embroidered - don't know where I got my love for thread and needle. I also made clothes for my daughter and me and lots of square dance dresses over the years. But we all have different things that we love to do and are good at and that's what makes the world go round!! ;-) Carol

  36. Hi Marydon...You are my Sister and I am your Mother. Mom taught me to sew at age 6 and I've sewn at some machine or another ever since. Sister...bless her heart...well, she's had me to make everthing for her. I'm a quilter and 'FeedSack' caught my eye on 'My Vintage Studio'. I've collected and quilted with feedsacks and 1930's reproductions and originals forever. Enjoyed your all of your blog and am now a follower. Hope you'll have a chance to visit CollectInTexas Gal....we have lots in common...Sue

  44. Marydon, that is so funny and so true to life. We all start as beginners and learn from our mistakes......

  45. LOL! I learned to sew at my mother's knee and I was pretty proficient at one time. Made my maternity clothes, curtain, calico appliance covers (remember those?) stuff for the nursery and then I gave it up for the most part. I can sew when I need to but don't enjoy it. Some of us are meant to do OTHER Things!

That's my story and I am sticking to it! LOL
