~~ The Apron ~~

~ My friend Judy shared this with me ~

GIVEAWAY @ http://michelestreasures.blogspot.com/

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,and it was easier to wash aprons than dresses. And they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the Fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the windowsill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

* I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron.

  2. This post has brought back so many memories for me. It makes me think about my great grandmother and all of her aprons. Many of them thread bare and stained but still perfectly functional. And yes, after all these years we are still alive and have not died from "Apron Disease" or from "Dirty Apron Syndrome". LOL.

  4. I love aprons. I got all kinds of aprons. Of course mine have cute and witty sayings on them instead of the pretty ones my grandma used to wear. My favorite is the one that says "Who are these kids and why are they calling me Mom?" As sloppy as I am, they do have a purpose in my house still.

  5. I am the envy of the sisters-in-law because I was given my husband's mother's apron. Not that any one of them would actually wear it- they don't cook!! She wore what would best be described as a smock- it covered everything. It was carried up to the altar in her funeral procession as one of her precious belongings. Bright, gaudy orange print... I wear it when I fry foods. My godchild and niece has hinted that she would someday like to have it. Thanks for a great post! Sue

  6. It's remarkable but I was just thinking about aprons the other day. I was wondering why I never wear one when I have two or three. Not that they are particularly nice ones.

I suppose I don't bake or cook a lot. When I do I wipe my hands on a tea towel.

I tend to wrap mine around my granddaughter when she has good clothes on and is eating something messy. I was thinking about making one for her and embroidering it with her name and appliqueing pictures on it.

I can't see your picture for some reason.

  9. Sweet post Marydon. I never ever saw my great grandmother that she didn't have her apron on when she was in the house. If company came, she'd strip it off and throw it aside, but other than that she had it on. AND she kept yummy Cinnamon Candy discs in one pocket, and her teeth in the other pocket. LOL!!!!!! she really did. ;) Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

  10. I do sometimes where an apron in the kitchen, one of those that goes over the head; though I was never handy enough to use as a potholder.

Last garage sale I hit, I purchased a cute little red apron, plan to give it to my great niece as part of her Christmas gift.

  11. What a wonderful post.I have always loved aprons! I think that is because of my Grandmother who always had one on. When I was teaching Kindergarten and First Grade I always wore an apron in class..kept my little plastic scissors handy to open ketchup packets etc for the kids.

    Aprons...a VERY GOOD THING...

  12. I don't know anyone that wears aprons anymore. My Grandma always wore one in the kitchen. And just like Mildred's post (Nalley Valley) talked about ladies hats, not many lady's wear them anymore either. We're all so casual. Kinda sad.

  15. I never wear an apron but am always getting something on my clothing. Let's face it, I'm not a neat cook. Maybe I need to think about sewing myself one?

I just love that about your creative posts. Thank you for sharing.

Also, thank you for stopping by and your kind comments on my vintage window.

  36. This is a "Martha" post. I absolutely loved going back in time to remember in my head, my grandmother and my aunts all wearing aprons, and when they were threadbare, they became useful as rags, and memories of the aprons kept going...
I remember making aprons as Christmas gifts and they were loved as well
