~ Love of Heirlooms ~

Thank you Marie for Heirloom Friday @ Emma Calls Me Momma.

Harvey Russell Ford (1908 - 1996), Harold's father, was a farmer before he moved his young family from Kingfisher, OK in l938 driving his Model A Ford. They packed up what belongings they could fit in the car, propped up their tiny son (Gayle) in the back seat ... & off they went to WA ST to escape the Dust Bowl. Pa farmed for a bit in Adna, WA before moving into the outskirts of town (Chehalis, WA) where he worked for a trucking delivery company briefly. He also barbered to supplement the family income. Pa had 1/2 cousins that 'encouraged him life would be better in WA ST' tho a couple years before Pa passed he refelcted 'that if I knew then what I know now, I'd never have given up the ranch (in OK) & left'.

The first picture is of Pa's own shaving mug, the soap (hard as a tack) is still in it, & his shaving brush.

The second picture is a cup that belonged to Pa's Father, William Harvey Ford (1844 - 1913). The only thing Pa had to treasure was this cup, which he gave to us, which is as precious as gold to us. W.H. had 3 sons from at least one marriage prior to marrying Pa's Mother, Eliza Jane Sherrod Hicks. W.R. was a farmer & well driller in TX. We are not sure when he moved to OK but prob 1904/6 because he married Eliza in 1906. W.R. & Eliza had 3 sons, Pa was first, David was b. 1910/d.1944 & 'Lee' b. 1912/d.1913. Pa was the sole remaining son of W.R. & Eliza, being a mere 4 years old when his Father died, with a near-to-none memory of his Father.

The third picture is of Harvey Russell & Naomi Hollis Underwood Ford's wedding picture somewhere in OK. Ma Ford recounted how they were 'chivalried all night' on their wedding night. It is the only known wedding picture.

The fourth picture is of his brother David Clark Ford, (mentioned in the above paragraphs) in his military uniform. He had one son, Sean, who died as a baby. We have one other picture of David on his favorite horse, Babe. We have only 3 pictures of him, so they are held close to our hearts.

The last picture is a Civil War picture of one of DHs relatives that we still cannot determine 'who' he is. Civil War pictures are to be treasured ... my husband, Harold, is a semi-expert on Civil War history so this is truly a precious picture to him, because of the family connection. It is priceless.

I have shown you before the walking cane of DHs maternal grandfather that served with General Lee at the surrender of Appamatox, as his minister.

  3. Oh My Goodness, Marydon... I'm so new to your blog --but am SO glad that I found it. We have something in common. My hubby is a Civil War buff--like your hubby. George loves Robert E. Lee --and even named his son after REL.

We visited Appamatox Court House --and some other of Robert E. Lee's stomping ground (including his home and church at Lexington, VA) ... Was Harold's grandfather William Nelson Pendleton????

Does your hubby blog or email? George (adamsge@mac.com) would probably love to hear from him. George's blog: HERE.

I love Family History --but don't have many heirlooms. Wish I did... IF I had have been more interested when I was younger, maybe I would l been able to find/keep more things.

I'm so glad I have met you, Marydon.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  12. I always love old shaving mugs, there is just something so nostalgic about them. The gold cup is a beauty and the family pictures are priceless. My old family photos are probably my most loved heirloom. It I had to leave the house because of fire/flood, God Forbid, they would be the one thing I would want to bring with me!

  26. Nice heirloom story.
Was visiting Rebecca of AGP this morning and she mentioned you had given her some ribbon she used in the poodle shirt creation. Sweet thing for her Miss K and you helped keep the cost down.
Wishing you happy PINK SATURDAY blessings.

  27. The older I get, the more interesting I find everyone's heritage. Hub is also a civil war buff, and I love to look at items from that time. We had such a wonderful visit to Gettysburg and the surrounding area. I have never forgotten it. Thank you or your kind words Marydon. I hope that you are doing just great.

  28. This is so interesting! What wonderful treasure. Thank you for writing this intriguing piece, I so enjoyed reading it. I, too, have pictures of relatives/friends/? from my family that no one knows or remembers who they are. If only I would have known or thought to ask when I was younger. Most of the pictures I never even new existed until my Grandmother passed and by then it was too late. I have one of a Portuguese (I am full Portuguese)Captain of some sort..very intriguing, an 8x10 so must have been someone close? Ah well, will have to leave that to the imagintation.
Thank you for visitng and leaving the nice comment. Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  29. Thanks for sharing the great old pictures and the interesting stories behind them. My dad used a brush and mug to shave when I was small. I also have a pic of my Pappy(grandfather) standing by a pick-up like this one. It was the first pick-up on the family farm I was raised on.

Thanks for your sweet comments on my blog and you have just the greatest weekend!!!
